I understand how it works and why it works, but what I'd like to know is how he got to that point? like how'd you end up with the exact formula that does it? could someone perhaps explain what the thought process coul've been for this? thanks.

You should maybe specify the closes 'bigger' numbers. Beside from that your explanation helped!
He is checking the length of the array after and substracts 1. If you have 'abcd', and split it by 'b'(the result would need to be 1) you will have [a, cd] which has length 2, then 2-1 its 1 :D
I am not sure if I understand how this one works. If you split at letter, my assumption was that you would still have the remaining letters in the new array.
