this way of doing it is very slow. but it has little code. do a runtime comparison with other codes

You are absolutely right and this solution should use the joining method at least because it is explicitly created for this purpose (even without mentioning the comparative efficiency), whereas reduce should be considered as a more generalized way to solve similar tasks.
