The only way to gain rank is solving katas, and you can gain honor in different ways: solving katas, publishing katas or translations, being upvoted in posts or solutions, etc. That's why some users with not so high rank can have a lot of honor points.
What is the relationship between honor and rank?
Why do some people have higher honour but a lower rank than others, in some cases to a huge extreme e.g. there is someone in the top 500 with 5000 honour but it only rank 5kyu.
