I'm having trouble passing the random test in python (still relatively new to the language, so it may be on my end). However, if I print out the list that is given as argument, and calculate by hand, I'm getting the same (apparently false) outcome, but somehow it doesn't pass the random tests (it does pass all other tests).

I changed the instructions slightly to make it clearer that the sum should be returned, not an array of all even Fibonacci's up to n.

pretty much the most readable solution I've seen so far.
Maybe if you simplify it to strings of length 2 it is even better. See JJordans solution.
